What began as a drinking shack at the side of a modest little café in October 1897 has undergone numerous renovations through the years. During World War I its patrons included Lenin, Trotsky, Picasso and Lithuanian painter Chaim Soutine. By the 1920s Americans and Swedes had joined the Russian and Spanish expatriates to make this the major cheap drinking spot on the Left Bank. It was also an informal renting service, loan office, assembly point for parties, place for magazine editors to look for contributors (and vice versa), and zoo for tourists in search of celebrities. It expanded down the street and began offering corn flakes and breakfast. Careers were made and broken at the tables of the Dôme, where a boastful Sinclair Lewis, flushed with the success of Main Street, was told, "Sit down. You're just a best seller!"
